Why did buckwheat flour make me sick?
Professor Mridul Agarwal said that the history of patients who have fallen ill due to buckwheat flour shows that sometimes this flour is infected, and eating it suddenly makes people sick. There can be many reasons behind this, the first and foremost of which is that this flour is mainly used during fasting, it is not eaten in daily meals. This flour can be stored for a long time, so it is sold only during fasts and festivals and sometimes it becomes infected due to being stored incorrectly for a long time or getting expired. Fungal or other types of infection develop in it and people fall ill after eating it.

Food experts listed these reasons
A senior official from the regional laboratory of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said that buckwheat flour is used occasionally rather than for daily needs, however it can be adulterated more easily than other flours. Also, these could be the reasons behind it getting contaminated and making people sick.

. Expired or infected flour- One reason for falling sick after eating buckwheat flour could be that the flour is expired and has developed some infection. In villages, people do not even check the expiry date of the product, they just buy and use it. This method can even take your life.

. Color and texture of buckwheat- Buckwheat flour is light grey in color, which can easily be adulterated with anything which cannot even be detected. People are mixing anything in it, which is playing with health.

. Adulteration during buckwheat harvest- After the buckwheat crop is produced, when it is ground, many such things also get ground in it, which are poisonous or harmful for health.

. Effect of lizard or snake- If a lizard or snake is ground in buckwheat flour or if it is kept in the open, then this flour can become poisonous due to their effect on the flour.

. Long term storage- Although buckwheat flour is stored for about 6 months, shopkeepers store it for longer than that and sell it on occasions, which can put people’s lives at risk if they eat it.

Its excessive consumption is also dangerous
Yashoda Super Specialty Hospital’s Senior Consultant Internal Medicine Dr. A.P. Singh says that although buckwheat flour is nutritious, but if consumed excessively or prepared in the wrong way, it can harm the digestive system. Apart from this, people who have food allergy problems should be careful before consuming buckwheat flour. There is a possibility of adulteration in buckwheat flour available in the market, which can cause problems like food poisoning. One should also avoid consuming flour stored for a long time, always buy pure and good brand buckwheat flour. At the same time, eat buckwheat flour in limited quantity, excessive consumption can cause stomach problems. 100-150 grams of buckwheat flour is sufficient in a day.
